What happened to all that free time various technologies were going to give us?

On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs discusses how, rather than seize upon the opportunity to improve our quality of life, post-industrialisation, we have instead seen a rise in the proportion of jobs in our society that have no tangible meaning. (It’s an excellent article, published by a paper that’s struggling to meet its server costs in light of the article’s popularity; they have a request for donations at the end) I also contend that much of the potential for improving our quality of life has been funnelled instead into profit (via competitive advantages) and economic growth, which, curiously enough, haven’t made us happier.
