Science Engagement and Rocking Out

My partner and I have been talking a bit over the last few months about how perceiving a group of people as “other” makes it almost impossible to empathise with them, and how this carries into policy on issues such as cycling infrastructure in car-dominated cities and refugees, and even attitudes towards singing (as something done by ordinary people vs something done by specialised artists). Similarly with scientific research: government won’t support what they don’t see as having public support, and how can the public support something from which they feel disconnected? That’s where initiatives like those discussed in this article in Nature’s EMBO Reports come in: science outreach through rock festivals.
